-in May 2, 1960 "Camper" Sharon Blackburn writes of "the old days" ("ten or so years ago"):
"Can you imagine riding in the back of a truck [to Camp]? When travelling down that
little road off the highway, which leads to camp, there was no big sign announcing that we had come to Dorion Bible
Camp. Peeking around the underbrush where the present kitchen now stands, we were able to detect a chapel, a
kitchen where Vacation Villa is now situated, and five cabins./ The size of the old kitchen would amaze you. As you
entered the front door, you were confronted by a room containing only four tables, and half the size of the
present kitchen. The cooks prepared the meals in a small kitchen extended on the side....We'd set two big dishpans on
one of the tables in the kitchen. One camper would wash, one would rinse, and a string of campers would be lined up
to dry.
Every morning, representatives from each cabin would dash up to the old hand pump by the kitchen, pump a
pail full of water, and bring it back to the cabin for washing purposes; thus campers bravely washed in the chilly
waters of Lake Superior, despite the presence of dead bugs floating around in the pail. Because there were no pumps to
pump the drinking water from the well, Dorion required the services of a water boy, who was none other than our own Mr.
Parks. Every day, Mr. Parks, complete with helpers and water wagon, would trot down to the spring and get drinking
water.
The sports program always included swimming, volleyball, softball, track and field. Although we didn't
have archery, basketball, or badminton, we used to play such rousing games as croquet, table hockey, and pick-up
sticks./The chapel also has undergone certain changes. The old earth floor has been replaced by a wooden one. After
chapel or campfire services we would hurry back to our cabins, hop into our bunks, and settle down on our fairly
comfortable, if rather lumpy straw mattresses."
