In Heaven There'll Only Bae Bagpipes
My most memorable performance of this song was soon after it was written, in the back room of the Dorion Bible Camp Dining Hall. I sang it in the dark to an audience of one young man full of questions about what he had been taught to believe. "Doesn't it just make you mad sometimes?" he asked when I finished. (Yes.)
Later he chose to take a rare step and not sign a paper saying he believed a list of teachings of which he was not certain -- even though I'm sure many others do so, or don't even understand what they are signing. This was a requirement to be on staff, although he was offered a maintenance role on the far property away from the campers. (The National organization now prohibits even that exception). And so four of us leaders had to meet with him to discuss this. He was told that his doubt would have a worse effect on the campers than a child molester! What he and two of us leaders didn't know at the time was that the third *was* in fact a child molester. Doesn't prove anything, I suppose, but it's ironic.
But I hurt him as well. I kept silent. I did not protect the weak. I got up after the interview with the others and we left him alone -- this one with whom I had shared those things that don't easily add up for me. I thank God for his aunt who prompted me to seek him out at home and tell him that I didn't want to become a "you" in the scathing poems he writes about those who tried to shut him down and make him fit. He knew what I meant and we hugged on his front steps.
I'm not saying he's a hero. There are forces other than fearful Christianity that still threaten to drain his life (and mine -- and yours). But in that scene of four he was more heroic than the rest of us, and, because I knew something of his heart, I was the least so.
