Simplified Singable Christmas and "Winter" Songs

(For Guitar, That Is)

If you've been playing guitar for even a little while, you will have learned that Christmas songs are notoriously difficult to play. Often they are written in "piano" keys and involve a lot of chord changes. This (ongoing) project is designed to overcome these problems.

"Singable" is a relative term. Usually it means a key that allows altos and baritones to sing melody. As this is sometimes a drag for basses and real altos who wish to harmonize--tenors don't usually mind--I've sometimes included an arrangement in the traditional key after the one in the singable key for use with groups who obviously can sing well and have a sufficient number of higher voices to carry the melody.

It might help to check with the group as to which verses they have and so on, since Christmas songs, especially the older public domain ones, are also notorious for existing in many variations. Note that the first version of "God Rest Ye Merry, Gentlemen" has all the verses I could find. The second version has only those verses that I usually come across in songbooks.

Songs are included alphabetically by title (excluding "The" and "A/n").

Sometimes I have given some indication of the melody using lower case letters. Unless otherwise stated, they are the notes of the "main" octave of the tune. ! indicates a note above that and ' one that is below.

Strictly speaking, the inclusion of many of the songs here is illegal. Giving the credit and saying "used without permission" doesn't actually fulfill the letter of the law. However, I'm hoping that doing so and the non-lucrative intention of this project will fulfill at least the spirit of Christmas, if not the spirit of Canadian Copyright Law.

Words and music by Mel Torme and Bob Wells.

I found the music in a book at someone else's house. It was in Eb and so I transposed
it. When I got home with my notes (& not the book), I discovered I may have mistransposed
some chords. So this represents my attempt to retranspose without the music in front of me.

     * I've tried to follow Sir John Stainer's harmonization as
much as possible. Adding the extra Bm's & A7's follows this
practice. However, the extra A's should really be Dmaj7's.
This is easily done by laying the first finger across the
       2nd fret of the high e, b & g strings. A2 is what I've
called A7 played with the b string left open. G sounds just
as good (except that Stainer's chord includes an e and a c#
in addition to g and b).-RP

		* I've tried to follow Sir John Stainer's harmonization as much as
possible. Adding the extra Bm's & A7's follows this practice.
However, the extra A's should really be Dmaj7's. This is easily
done by laying the first finger across the 2nd fret of the high
		  e, b & g strings. A2 is what I've called A7 played with the b
string left open. G sounds just as good (except that Stainer's
chord includes an e and a c# in addition to g and b).
  		11/16/97
I just go ahead an sub G for A2 now. 01/10/07

I have followed HB's use of "them" and "they" although it seems
inconsistent to me. I believe the recording I have of his is in
Bb. So, you'll have to capo 3.

MELE KALIKIMAKA
		R. Alex Anderson

		G
Mele Kalikimaka is the thing to say
        	                               D7
On a bright Hawaiian Christmas Day.

That's the island greeting that we send to you
                		               G
From the land where palm trees sway.
		G G7 C
Here we know that Christmas will be green and bright
		    E7 A7 D7
The sun will shine by day, and all the stars by night.
		G G7 E7 Am D7 G
Mele Kalikimaka is Hawaii's way to say "Merry Christmas" to you.

Words: Combined from various antiphons by an unknown author, possibly in the 12th Century
(Veni, veni Emanuel); translated from Latin to English by John M. Neale, Mediaeval Hymns,
1851. Neales original translation began, Draw nigh, draw nigh, Emmanuel.

Music: Veni Emmanuel, from a 15th Century processional of French Franciscan nuns
(the setting for the funeral hymn Libera me); arranged by Thomas Helmore in the
Hymnal Noted, Part II (London: 1856)

THEN HOW THE REINDEER LOVED HIM,
