Better version
Friday, February 11, 2000: The British General Gordon looked from the walls
of Jerusalem in the 1880's and saw this skull-like hill and concluded that
it must be "The Place of the Skull" (Golgotha or Calvary), despite the fact
that the Church of the Holy Sepulchre had claimed to mark the spot elsewhere for
centuries. The more ancient site would have been just outside the walls at
Christ's time, while this site would have been even further outside of those
walls. (The present walls of the old city were built in 1517). The discovery
of "The Garden Tomb" nearby made Gordon even more certain of his identification
of this site.
