[Reunions] [Nov. 2 Dinner] [Summer 2000] [Eagles Nest]

Camp Reunions

Campers and staff got together on December 9/2000 for a great time of recalling Camp memories! Younger campers gathered at Westfort Baptist Church's building in the morning and older campers gathered there in the afternoon.

Keith Adams led us in such games as Fruit Basket Mix-up, Partner Dodgeball and Find the Chocolate Bar (blindfolded!). We shook the foundations as Richard Pepper led us in such camp songs as the infamous "Hippo Song". Margie Wilson was in charge of the snacks consumed during the viewing of slides of Summer 2000. Charlie Wilson and Keith reminded us of ways in which God may have spoken to us while at camp, as they shared with us from Micah 6 and John 4.

Several campers signed up for MIBS (Mail In Bible Studies), which feature prizes for those who complete them. Contact Keith for more info or to sign up!

Campers and staff 13 years or up were invited to fill out staff applications, if interested in serving Christ at Camp Dorion this coming summer. I think Keith ran out of forms that day, but contact him, if you are interested.

If you didn't receive an invitation to the Reunion, it may be that we don't have your snail-mail address correct. Contact Richard to correct your address.

Thank you Westfort Baptists for the use of your facilities.

About 300 people attended DBCCC's Fundraising Dinner and Silent Auction held November 2, 2000 at the Slovak Legion in Thunder Bay. Over $12,000.00 (donations and auction purchases) was raised.

Music was provided by "The Sunday Nite Choir" and Marilyn Rayner. An audio-visual presentation put together by Darren Foulds and Richard Pepper highlighted the evening's theme "A Tribute to Treasure Seekers" as events and key people of the last few years of DBCCC were featured. Thanks go to Dave Funk and Shawn Seargeant for their technical assistance. Along with this presentation, fulltime CSSM Ministries staff each described his/her role in Dorion's ministry.

Our thanks go to all who attended, to those who donated items for the auction and to all whose efforts contributed to an enjoyable evening.

Eagles Nest Dedication

Marilyn Shaver, winner of the "Name the Chalet Contest", receives her prize from Charlie Wilson.
"Eagles Nest" is an answer to prayer for many as it now provides a winterized, year-round conference centre for Christians. Construction began in July 1997, led by CSSM missionary, Don Tulloch. Long hours of labour (often by volunteers), much prayer and sacrificial giving followed.

April 16, 2000 was chosen as the official opening date. Eleanor Moyer, who, as our third Director, headed up Dorion Bible Camp life from 1950 to 1971, cut the ribbon, declaring "Eagles Nest" open for ministry. Marilyn Shaver had won the "name the Chalet" contest, while her husband, Don, wrote a new song for the facility, which they performed as part of the ceremony. Much has been said already about the eagle spotted flying at a distance over the lake just after Keith Adams, Manager of Operations, had read these words from Deuteronomy 32:11: "Like an eagle that stirs up its nest, that hovers over its young, He spread His wings and caught them; He carried them on His pinions." Perhaps it is a good thing that we didn't choose the name "Black Bear Lodge".

Have Tools; Will Travel

In May 2000, after eleven years of faithful service at Dorion, Don and Helen Tulloch packed their truck and trailer with tools and a few personal belongings to begin an exciting new chapter in their lives. Lord willing, this new ministry will take them to many different locations, where Don will use his skill and experience to oversee the development of major building projects.

The Tullochs' first assignment was at Lake of the Trees Bible Camp (near Hundred Mile House, BC), constructing a new lodge. Summer 2001 was spent at Camp Livingstone in Quebec. Most recently they participated in the October "Quick Build" at the Dorion Bible Conference Centre.

DBCCC Welcomes the Hambly Fambly

Click here for more Hambly info.
Stephen and Melanie with Ben, Lia, Rachel and Hannah.
On August 29th Stephen Hambly began his work as Site Manager for Dorion Bible Camp and Conference Centre. Stephen and his wife, Melanie, will be full-time Dorion staff and therefore members of CSSM Ministries. Formerly, they and their children, Ben, Lia, Rachel and Hannah, lived in Elmvale, Ontario (near Barrie), where Stephen worked in O.P.P. Communications.

Alain and Bonnie Pleau moved on to ministry with Ontario Pioneer Camp early this year. The Hamblys were unable to join us until the Autumn. We very much appreciated Don Shaver, who volunteered to head up the Maintenance Team for the Summer, assisted by his right-hand man, Karl "Clutch" Wilson. The office and bookstore/ tuckshop also greatly benefited from the presence of Marilyn Shaver, who remarkably volunteered at the same time as her husband.

See 02 Pictures for the Hamblys' departure for Galilean Bible Camp.

Christmas Hamper in July

For years we have been celebrating the birth of Christ during Primary Camp. It's a good way to connect with what our youngest campers have already experienced of the story of Jesus, (even if a certain 4th century Turkish Bishop has--in disguise--preoccupied their thoughts!) But it occurred to us that another way we could honour this occasion would be to ask for donations of food for Shelter House. Many organizations do this in December, but the summer months can be quite lean. At the end of Primary week we were overwhelmed with the generous response, especially since the only notice parents had received of our plan was at the beginning of the week. Thank you for your thoughtfulness. It seems we have begun a new Dorion Bible Camp tradition!
